The University of Birmingham

The University of Birmingham

The University of Birmingham, founded in 1900, is one of Britain’s leading international research universities with more than 7,500 students from over 120 countries enrolled in postgraduate study. The University is made up of five Colleges encompassing almost every discipline in the arts and humanities, social sciences, law, engineering, physical sciences, medicine and dental sciences, life and health sciences. Birmingham leads the field in many of the emerging disciplines of the 21st century, such as hydrogen vehicle technology, nanotechnology, gene therapy, robotics and the use of virtual reality in archaeology.

The University of Melbourne

The University of Melbourne

The University of Melbourne is one of Australia’s oldest universities and celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2003. A leading international university with a strong tradition of excellence in teaching, research and research training, Melbourne is currently introducing a groundbreaking curriculum reform, the Melbourne Model, which aligns its teaching with the best of European and Asian practice and North American traditions.

The Melbourne Model offers students six broad undergraduate programs, followed by a graduate-level professional program, such as Law or Medicine, a research higher degree or entry directly into employment. The University of Melbourne comprises seven faculties and 13 graduate schools, including the Melbourne Business School, and has over 3,000 academic staff. It is home to around 45,000 students including 11,000 international students from more than 100 countries undertaking undergraduate, postgraduate and Study Abroad programs. Nine University residential colleges and three halls of residence are situated close to the campus.

The University is consistently ranked among the leading universities in the world. For instance, according to the Times Higher Education 2009 World University Rankings, international peers put Melbourne in the top 20 universities worldwide, and employers rank it at No 6 in the world for graduate employability. The University of Melbourne enjoys extensive international links through its worldwide alumni, its diverse student base, and the Universitas 21 and Association of Pacific-Rim Universities networks of research-led universities.

The University of Nottingham

The University of Nottingham

The University of Nottingham received its Royal Charter in 1948, but traces its roots to the 19th century. Its main campus occupies a 330-acre parkland site three miles west of central Nottingham. Research and teaching are carried out in the Faculties of Arts, Social Sciences, Science, Engineering, and Medicine. In 2008/09 there were some 36,932 full-time and part-time students at its campuses in the UK, China and Malaysia. At Nottingham UK this includes more than 8,000 international students drawn from more than 150 countries.

The University of Virginia

The University of Virginia

The University of Virginia was founded in 1819 by Thomas Jefferson in Charlottesville at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is consistently ranked among the top public universities in the United States. The Jefferson-designed Rotunda, Pavilions, Ranges and Lawn constitute perhaps the most architecturally significant central setting for any university in the country. The University embodies the American ideal of education, training leaders in an environment foster in excellence in both research and undergraduate teaching. Enrolment is 18,500 undergraduate and graduate students in the following schools: architecture, arts and sciences, commerce, education, engineering, graduate business, law, medicine and nursing.

The University also conducts numerous off-campus programs both in the United States and abroad through its school of continuing and professional studies. A distinguished faculty, numbering more than 1,900 full-time members, has received honors and awards in many fields of endeavour.
